Visit to SF

It’s always super fun when Dave aka Luminate makes it back to SF. Not only did he used to live here, but it’s also an opportunity for the two brothers to reconnect and share new ideas, jam, record and catch up.

This trip was no different. As in past trips, Dave brought with him some gear to demo and jam with. This trip he brought the Make Noise 0-coast analog semi-modular synthesizer along with the Arturia BeatStep pro sequencer.

While Dave was in SF, we workshopped on several new techniques including a process for building a track based on 4 sections of 4 tracks each with parts for each section. This follows a bit of a band structure, where the parts could be percussion, bass, harmony and melody (or something similar) and the song parts could be intro, verse, chorus, break. We’ve been adapting it a bit more towards an electronic format, but the technique still works quite nicely. We made one concept track and eventually recorded a bit more than just ‘4×4’ but it was a great exercise in focus and exploration of various sounds and parts that might go together. We used the 0-coast in the recording along with some DSI Tempest, Korg Electribe 2 and probably some more of the other kit in Peter’s (aka Mystik’s) studio in SF.
